Adventure, passion, imagination, and a bit of crazy are the best ways to define last night’s event hosted by the remarkable founders of Brewdog. Martin Dickie and James Watt brought their unconventional beers, insane stories, and nonchalant attitudes to the first ever Brewdog dinner in Aberdeen with the intention of spreading their passion about good beer. By teaming up with the incredibly talented chefs here at Musa, they were able to construct a menu that pulled everyone from a world of boredom and tradition and tossed them into a place where it is not only accepted, but encouraged, to put chocolate on your macaroni and cheese and talk to your beer.
Our guests actually did just that. The first dish to come out of the kitchen was Musa’s prominent Mac n’ Cheese with Belgian Dark Chocolate. It was cleverly paired with Brewdog’s idiosyncratic black lager, Zeitgeist. James and Martin got up and taught everyone how to truly appreciate the beer -- which included having a pleasant wee conversation with it. At first everyone seemed to be a little timid, whispering sweet-nothings to the progressive beer. But as the night continued on the diners lost all inhibitions and gave a hearty “Hello!” to a beer they had never tried before. Even if the guests thought they had tried every Brewdog beer, they were wrong! In a label less bottle was a new prototype beer, served exclusively to the diners at last night’s dinner.
Six unique beers were paired with six original dishes. Not only was the food ingeniously complimentary to the beers in flavour, but it was as though it had teamed up with the beers to push people’s conventions. Can you say Hardcore IPA Duck Stovies served with a nice chilled ‘5am Saint’ without raising an eyebrow in curiosity? Martin and James talked a lot about their mission to show people that they don’t have to stick with the same old mundane beers, and the unique dishes only further emphasized that.
Whether it was the crazy Brewdog stories about monks or the fantastic beer-food combos the evening was unforgettable. Each person undoubtedly left with a bit of the infectious passion for good beer that emanated from James and Martin. With pushing things such as food and beer pass the line of ordinary, it is gauranteed that everyone gained a bit of inspiration and lost a bit of inhibition. It was an incredible event and we look forward to more in the future!
